Strong beers, stronger values
We recently visited Oproer in Utrecht to not only sample some of their great beers now selling on our marketplace, but also to learn more about what makes them tick!
What is Oproer Brewery?
Founded in 2014, the brewery has gained a reputation for producing high-quality, innovative beers that are both delicious and socially conscious.
Oproer brewery is known for its diverse range of beer styles, with a particular emphasis on bold and experimental flavours. Their beers often feature creative names inspired by music, ranging from classic rock to punk and metal.
Not only do they create and serve great beers in their bar in Utrecht, they also are a restaurant and cultural center. Their restaurant serves a variety of plant-based dishes that are both delicious and sustainable. Their cultural events range from live music and art exhibitions to film screenings and poetry readings. In this way, Oproer is not just a place to drink beer - it's a community hub that brings together people who share a passion for good beer, good food, and social responsibility.
Oproer's commitment to inclusivity and accessibly shows also in their range of gluten-free beers. They offer a variety of gluten-free beers for those who have gluten sensitivities or celiac disease. Oproer uses a method to remove the gluten from the beer, instead of brewing with ingredients without gluten.
An unfortunate event
In 2021, a devastating fire broke out in Oproer's brewery, causing significant damage to the building and equipment. The fire forced the brewery to temporarily close its doors, and the team had to work hard to rebuild and recover from the damage.
Despite the setback, Oproer remained resilient and determined to come back stronger than ever. The brewery's team launched a crowdfunding campaign to help cover the costs of rebuilding and were overwhelmed by the support they received from their community. Thanks to the outpouring of support, Oproer was able to rebuild and reopen in September 2022, just eight months after the fire. The brewery unveiled a new brewhouse and taproom, featuring updated equipment and an expanded capacity for brewing!
Supporting D&I in the brewing industry
Oproer brewery is dedicated to promoting gender equality and feminism. The brewery recognizes that the beer industry, like many industries, has historically been male-dominated, and they are committed to challenging this status quo.
One way that Oproer promotes feminism is by actively supporting women in the beer industry. The brewery has hosted events featuring women brewers and has collaborated with other breweries that are owned or run by women. Oproer uses their beer labels and branding to promote feminist values and they also host fundraisers to support women in difficult situations in their cafe.
Oproer's team also includes several women in leadership positions, including the head brewer and the marketing manager.
