Pale Ale

The history of Pale Ale

Pale ales have been around for about 300 years. It all started when brewers wanted to brew a paler beer with more consistency in taste. The most common beers at the time were mostly dark in colour, such as the porter or stout. The reason for this was down to a heating process that used wood, which often resulted in the barley tasting roasted. Along with technological innovation came the opportunity to brew lighter beer. Instead of wood, coal was used. This made it much easier to control the heating process. The result was a golden to light copper beer. Slowly, pale ale gained in popularity and became more common than dark beers. In the craft beer revolution in the US, the American pale ale played an important role. American pale ale is now defined as being hoppier and therefore more bitter and fruity. English pale ale on the other hand is much more balanced.

American Pale Ale

Sierra Nevada Pale Ale is a classic example of an accessible American pale ale. Brewed using American cascade hops and clean fermenting ale yeast, its taste and appearance typify West Coast style craft beers today. Due to its floral, citrusy notes, it can work wonders when paired with lighter dishes such as salads or chicken. But that’s not to say pale ale from America can’t handle the heat, as it will also complement a robust chilli or any fare that carries a hint of tongue-tingling spice.

English Pale Ale

A popular English pale ale on the other hand is the Meantime Pale Ale. Versatile and earthy with a malty aroma, Meantime Pale Ale will provide a truly rewarding drinking experience. Simply pick up a knife and fork and dive right into some hearty British pub food with an English pale ale at your side or switch up the plate for a platter of soft and hard cheeses and treat your taste buds to a surprisingly pleasant taste sensation.
