IPA beer / India Pale Ale

What is India Pale Ale?

During the expansion of the British Empire, a lot of sailors, soldiers and emigrants were based in India. The climate in India was naturally too hot to brew beer, so instead it had to be transported from England. Extra hops were added to the brewing process so the beer could travel the distance and still be good at the end of the journey. This is what made IPAs a hoppier beer style with a higher amount of alcohol. The India pale ale was rediscovered in America in the 1970s after it had almost disappeared. Nowadays, there are lots of American IPA beers on the market, such as the Lagunitas IPA. The IPA trend caught on quickly in Europe and is now one of the most popular around. One of today’s most admired brewers, Brewdog, has come out with a variety of IPAs, including Punk IPA or Elvis Juice.

IPA beer food pairing

IPA beer is also well liked thanks to the fact that it can be paired with different dishes in order to enhance the overall taste of both the cuisine in question and the beer. For example, if you can handle a bit of heat, India pale ale will form a pretty wild combination with spicy dishes. Take a sip after a fork or spoonful of Thai or Indian food to experience for yourself how the bitterness of the beer and spiciness of the food work together to elevate each other’s intensity. Conversely, if you’re at a bar tucking into those complimentary peanuts, you may even notice that the salt will somewhat ease the beer’s bitterness and emphasise the fruity and flowery hoppy notes. Let’s not forget either that aromatic IPAs with hints of fruit can also serve as the perfect partner to a fresh fruit salad.

Different IPA beers

There are a few different kinds of IPA to consider. A session IPA for instance has a lower amount of alcohol, while double and imperial IPAs are stronger, with a higher concentration of hops. Learn more about double IPA, American IPAs, session IPAs and the evolution of IPA here.
